This was what happened -- Rita Dominic breaks silence

Nollywood can be a very complicated thing and place, Nigerian actress, Rita Dominic breaks silence on her career path over the years.

In a recent interview with Ghana’s Joy 99.7 FM, esteemed actress Rita Dominic disclosed her tumultuous journey in Nollywood, shedding light on the challenges she faced due to her pursuit of change within the industry.

Dominic revealed that she was subjected to a silent ban orchestrated by influential marketers, who held significant sway over Nollywood’s landscape at the time. The actress expressed her determination to innovate and do things differently, which evidently didn’t sit well with the established order.

“Before I decided to become a producer and form our company, I was silently banned,” Dominic disclosed. “They banned me because I was trying to do things differently.”

The actress emphasized the dominance of marketers in Nollywood, portraying them as “mini-gods” whose approval dictated the fate of actors and filmmakers alike.

Reflecting on her early days in the industry, Dominic reminisced about receiving a meager sum of N10,000 for her first movie role. Despite the lack of financial incentives, her unwavering passion for the craft sustained her through the challenging times.

“It was very challenging. But we just kept doing it until the industry got bigger and bigger. And obviously, the pay became much better,” she stated.

Dominic also shared anecdotes about the financial struggles she faced, revealing that her compensation for her initial movie role amounted to a mere N10,000, with the filmmaker failing to fulfill the agreed-upon payment terms.

“The first film I did, the filmmaker paid me N35,000. But he owed me N25,000 for how many months. In fact, he didn’t even pay me the balance. He paid me only N10,000,” she recounted.
