VAR Strikes In Qatar But Why Ecuador Were In The Wrong

A lot of narratives were created about Qatar hosting the world cup tournament, and quite a lot were ready to be created if by chance the host nation had crossed past the line against opponents Ecuador to steal a result from the game.

It was a game that was largely controlled by the Ecuador side against a poor team of Qatar that made many mistakes to gift their opponents chances, but one chance that drove lots of narratives was the 3rd minute goal that was ruled out for offside by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).

In the opening match of the 2022 World Cup, Ecuador was denied an early goal against the hosts, Qatar, by a close offside ruling.

In the third minute, Enner Valencia believed he had given the South Americans the lead.

After Saad Al Sheeb, the goalie for Qatar, was fouled, Valencia headed the ball in from close range.

To the surprise of both players and spectators, the goal was ultimately chalked off following a thorough examination by the VAR crew.

Since there was no explanation provided at the time, fans were also left perplexed.

However, later replays revealed that Michael Estrada’s foot and knee in the setup were just slightly offside.

A challenge by Felix Torres on Al Sheeb resulted in the ball falling to Estrada, who headed it to Torres, whose overhead kick across goal was met by Valencia.

The South American team eventually ran out 0-2 winners against the host nation, Qatar with 2 additional goals scored by Valencia.
