"The Bad eggs in Nollywood" -- Shan George opens up

Renowned Nollywood actress Shan George has raised concerns about the escalating lack of professionalism within the Nigerian film industry, attributing this trend to the infiltration of individuals insufficiently educated about the industry’s protocols and standards.

In an interview with Saturday Beats, the veteran movie star highlighted the growing presence of “bad eggs” in Nollywood, emphasizing their lack of adequate education and training, leading to a surge in unprofessional behavior among practitioners.

Shan George pointed out that this issue isn’t exclusive to Nollywood but is increasingly prevalent across various entertainment sectors, signaling a broader concern about the erosion of professionalism in the industry.

“The bad eggs, who are not well educated and trained enough for the job to know the rules and tenets of the profession, are the ones responsible (for unprofessionalism),” she remarked, expressing her dismay at the escalating frequency of such conduct across industries.

Drawing from her own educational background, George, a Mass Communication graduate specializing in broadcasting, attributed her knowledge and proficiency in acting to her academic training, which encompassed television, screenwriting, presenting, and news dissemination—skills closely aligned with her work in Nollywood.

Recalling her initiation into the movie industry, Shan George reminisced about her unexpected foray into Nollywood in 1996.

Attending an audition for the movie “Thorns of Rose” produced by Emeka Osai at Maryland, Lagos, she inadvertently became involved after accompanying her sister.

The audition led to her involvement in the nationwide NTA soap opera, “Winds of Destiny,” directed by Sadiq Daba, marking the beginning of her illustrious journey in the film industry.
