"We have to play our best football now" -- Ekong on Angola clash

In the buildup to the highly anticipated quarter-final clash between Nigeria and Angola in the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Super Eagles assistant captain, William Troost-Ekong, has expressed the challenging task faced by head coach Jose Peseiro in selecting the starting lineup for the crucial match.

Following their impressive victories over Cameroon and Namibia in the round of 16, Nigeria and Angola secured their places in the quarter-finals, setting the stage for a compelling encounter in Ivory Coast on Friday.

Troost-Ekong addressed reporters after the Super Eagles‘ recovery session at the Ecole Nationale de la Police on Monday, shedding light on the team’s preparation for the upcoming clash.

He emphasized the formidable nature of the Angolan team, highlighting the need for Nigeria to bring their A-game to secure a win.

“We are preparing for the game the same way as we have for every match in this tournament. Angola looks like a very good team, and we will have to play our best football to try and beat them,” Troost-Ekong stated.

The defender further pointed out the intense competition within the squad, stating,

“We are working very hard; you can see it today in the training. Everyone is trying to do the maximum, and it is going to be difficult for the coach to select who is going to play.”

Troost-Ekong concluded by expressing the team’s collective focus and determination as they approach the crucial quarter-final clash.

“From here, we are going to be very focused for the game on Friday,” he affirmed
