NFF appoints Finidi George as Super Eagles head coach ahead of World Cup Qualifiers

The Nigeria Football Federation has announced the appointment of  Finidi George as the new head coach of the Super Eagles.

George, a former international player, has secured the position after competing against Emmanuel Amuneke for the role.

Previously, George served as an assistant coach under José Santos Peseiro for 20 months. Following Peseiro’s departure after the Africa Cup of Nations runner-up achievement in Cote d’Ivoire 2023, George took charge of the squad in an interim capacity during two friendly matches in Morocco last month.

Now officially appointed as head coach, George faces an immediate challenge. His first task is to guide the Super Eagles through two crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against South Africa and Benin Republic.

These matches, scheduled to take place in Uyo and Abidjan, respectively, are essential for the team’s World Cup campaign.

Currently, the Super Eagles are in third place in Group C of the African qualifiers, trailing behind Rwanda and South Africa.

With these upcoming matches being must-win encounters, George and his team must secure victories to bolster their chances of advancing in the World Cup qualification process.
