Alex Iwobi: "Reports are being overexaggerated" -- Source reveals

Following the conclusion of the 2023 AFCON tournament last weekend between Ivory Coast and Nigeria, Super Eagles star, Alex Iwobi became a target for online trolls who picked issues with the Fulham star’s performance in the final.

In response, reports circulated online, alleging plans by Alex Iwobi to quit the Nigerian national team.

The Nigerian international in a widely reported story, had deleted his social media presence following the AFCON final, leading to concerns from the public and sparking notions of an early retirement by the Fulham midfielder from the Eagles set up.

However, Guardian UK reporter, Osasu Obayiuwana has debunked the reports, insisting the midfielder’s social media activity was an overexaggeration by the public.

According to Obayiuwana, Alex Iwobi understands what matters and what doesn’t.

He said on the situation;

“Alex is totally unaffected by all the noise that has been making the rounds. He has no plans to quit the Eagles, as he loves playing for his country. He cannot be hounded out by the opinions of people whose opinions don’t matter.”

Obayiuwana backs his statement based on a tip from a source close to the Fulham star and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), as he took to his X profile to address the situation;

“I just spoke to someone extremely close to @NGSuperEagles @alexiwobi. I won’t name the person, because he’s asked me not to quote him. But he knows Alex as well as anyone possibly can.

“This is what he has to say, “Alex is totally unaffected by all the noise that has been making the rounds. He has no plans to quit the Eagles, as he loves playing for his country. He cannot be hounded out by the opinions of people whose opinions don’t matter…

“Mental strength is key in this business and Alex wouldn’t be playing at this level for over nine years if he was weak. He is now a veteran of the game and doesn’t allow such negativity to get to him.

“There will always be haters and trolls but the majority of #Nigerians love him and appreciate his talent and what he has achieved…”
