"He is not good enough for Manchester United" -- Chris Sutton

Former Chelsea star Chris Sutton has voiced strong criticism of Manchester United for their decision to sign goalkeeper Andre Onana from Inter Milan during the summer transfer window.

Sutton believes that Onana is not up to the standard required to play for the Red Devils and argues that Manchester United should have retained David de Gea as their goalkeeper.

Speaking on Mail Sport’s “It’s All Kicking Off” podcast, Sutton expressed his concerns about Onana’s performance, citing a series of high-profile errors that have put added pressure on the Manchester United team.

“In truth, I had to look his name up,” Sutton admitted.

“We’ve had this great debate about Arsenal having two excellent goalkeepers.

“I think Onana is okay with his feet, but you eventually have to use your hands, and I don’t think he’s good enough.”

Sutton went on to highlight how errors by goalkeepers often lead to in-depth analysis on television broadcasts like Match of the Day, with pundits dissecting the build-up to a conceded goal.

“The bottom line is, over the years, Manchester United have had great goalkeepers – Peter Schmeichel, even David de Gea,” Sutton stated.

“De Gea was a far better goalkeeper than Onana, but if Onana simply does his job – and it wasn’t a difficult save to make – then there’s no issue.”

Sutton’s main argument is that Onana’s presence is intensifying the pressure on the entire Manchester United team, and he believes that the Cameroonian goalkeeper falls short of the required standard for a club of United’s stature.

“I think he is bringing increased pressure on the whole team, and the truth is he is not good enough for Manchester United, and they have made a major mistake by bringing him in,” Sutton concluded.
