Why I chose Arsenal -- Jurrien Timber

Jurrien Timber, the talented Dutch defender, expressed his sense of belonging as he completed his move from Ajax to Arsenal. The 22-year-old has joined the Gunners on a long-term contract, becoming the club’s second signing of the summer following Kai Havertz’s arrival.

The transfer fee for Timber is believed to be around £38 million, reflecting his impressive performances and 121 senior appearances for Ajax. The defender is now set to link up with the Arsenal squad ahead of their pre-season tour in the United States, where they are scheduled to face an MLS All-Star XI in their next warm-up match on Thursday.

Despite reported interest from Manchester United and Liverpool, Timber stated that he had no doubts about joining Arsenal once he became aware of their interest. In a video to announce his move, the Dutch defender outlined his reasons for choosing the Gunners.

“Growing up in Utrecht, we all dreamed of being football players,” Timber shared, reflecting on his childhood. “When I watched games with my brothers when I was a kid, of course I wanted to play for one of the biggest and best teams in the world.”

Timber continued, expressing the importance of playing for a team that aligns with his values: “But I really had a sense that it had to be a team that plays in the right way, a club that has the right values, that develops young talent, and has an unbreakable bond with its supporters.”

Now that he has arrived at Arsenal, Timber expressed his immediate sense of belonging, remarking, “And now that I’m here, I feel at home already. Something special is happening here. And I want to be part of it. Now, let’s get to work.”

Prior to the move, rival club, Manchester United had sought for the former Ajax man’s signature with current Red Devils’ boss, Erik ten Hag being an admirer.

Meanwhile, Arsenal’s sporting director, Edu, expressed his delight at securing the signing of Jurrien Timber, emphasizing the club’s admiration for the player. Edu praised the team’s effort in finalizing the deal and highlighted Timber’s youthful talent, which aligns with Arsenal’s vision of building a strong, young squad.

The Gunners are optimistic that Timber’s arrival will further strengthen their defensive options and contribute to the team’s success in the upcoming season. As the talented Dutch defender settles into his new environment, Arsenal fans eagerly anticipate witnessing his development and impact on the field.
