Israel vs. Hamas: "My sources say we're close" -- Biden

US President Joe Biden has expressed optimism for a ceasefire in the Israel-Gaza conflict, aiming for progress by the upcoming Monday. Negotiations, involving representatives from Israel and Hamas in Qatar, have reportedly shown signs of advancement.

Addressing reporters in New York City, President Biden stated, “My national security adviser tells me that we’re close.” He emphasized ongoing efforts towards achieving a ceasefire, underscoring the importance of continued dialogue.

The conflict escalated when Israel launched a comprehensive air and ground campaign in response to Hamas gunmen’s actions, which resulted in casualties and hostages. The toll in Gaza has been devastating, with thousands killed and wounded, according to the Hamas-run health ministry.

Speaking on the negotiations, a spokesperson for the US State Department acknowledged recent progress in discussions aimed at releasing Israeli hostages. However, uncertainties persist regarding Hamas’ acceptance of the proposed deal.

Last week, the US drew criticism for vetoing a UN Security Council resolution urging an immediate ceasefire. Instead, the US proposed its own temporary ceasefire resolution while cautioning Israel against an invasion of Rafah in southern Gaza.

Amid concerns of a potential Israeli offensive in Rafah, international pressure mounts on Israel to exercise restraint. Plans to evacuate civilians from the city have been discussed by Israeli authorities, amidst calls for de-escalation and protection of civilian lives.
