I was discouraged for being an albino -- Damilola Ogunsin

Damilola Ogunsin, a talented Nollywood actor, recently opened up about the challenges he faced in the movie industry due to his albinism. In a candid interview with Hip TV, Ogunsin revealed how a prominent movie director once dismissed his acting aspirations solely based on his albinism.

Recalling the incident, Ogunsin shared,

“When I was entering Nollywood, I encountered a renowned director whose name I won’t mention. He looked at me and questioned why I wanted to be an actor, stating that there were very few albinos in the industry. He believed it wasn’t a suitable path for me.”

Undeterred by the director’s discouraging words, Ogunsin emphasized his lifelong passion for theater, tracing his involvement in dramatic arts back to his primary school days. From primary school to secondary school, church groups, and even his academic pursuits at the polytechnic in Ibadan and the University of Lagos, Ogunsin’s dedication to theater remained unwavering.

The actor, lovingly known as the ‘Gold Fish,’ firmly asserted that his skin color should not impede his ability to achieve his dreams. Fuelled by his unwavering determination, Ogunsin took the bold step of resigning from his banking job to pursue a career in Nollywood.

Reflecting on his journey, which has spanned six fruitful years since his transition from banking to acting, Ogunsin acknowledged that it has not been an easy path. However, he consistently strives to defy stereotypes, emphasizing that he is not aiming to be recognized solely as an “albino actor,” but rather as an actor who happens to be an albino—an important distinction that empowers him to carve his own unique path.
