Full Breakdown of Ratcliffe's Manchester United takeover

In a landmark move, Sir Jim Ratcliffe confirmed his acquisition of a substantial 25 percent stake in Manchester United today, valued at a staggering £1.25 billion.

This strategic investment by Ratcliffe, facilitated through his petrochemicals corporation Ineos, signifies a significant shift in the ownership landscape of the renowned football club.

The purchased stake comprises Manchester United’s B shares, predominantly held by the Glazer family, who retain a dominant ownership of 69% of the club and maintain control over the majority of voting rights.

Despite Ratcliffe’s acquisition, the Glazer family will continue to wield a substantial influence within Manchester United, retaining a significant stake in the club.

Ratcliffe’s investment, however, grants him substantial authority over the football operations and academies, encompassing both the men’s and women’s teams. As part of this acquisition, Ratcliffe secures two seats on the boards of Manchester United PLC and Manchester United Football Club.

Upon receiving the necessary approvals, Ratcliffe intends to assign his Manchester United PLC board seats to Rob Nevin, chairman of Ineos Sport, and John Reece, a stakeholder at Ineos.

For the UK club board, Ratcliffe plans to appoint former British Cycling chief Sir Dave Brailsford and former executive of Juventus and Paris Saint Germain, Jean-Claude Blanc.

Following the sealing of the deal on December 24, subject to approval by the English FA, Avram Glazer and Joel Glazer, United’s executive co-chairmen and directors, expressed their optimism about Ratcliffe and Ineos’s involvement.

“Sir Jim and Ineos bring a wealth of commercial experience and significant financial commitment to the club,” stated Avram and Joel Glazer.

“Through Ineos Sport, Manchester United will benefit from seasoned high-performance professionals, adept at leading elite teams both within and outside the game.”
