3-Storey building collapses in Lagos Island

In the wake of a heavy downpour in Lagos on Thursday, a three-story building located at Ita Faaji Market in the Lagos Island local government area of Lagos collapsed, sending shockwaves through the community.

According to reports, the incident occurred around nine in the morning, prompting immediate response efforts from emergency services.

In a statement issued by Margaret Adeseye, the director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services, it was revealed that the collapsed structure was undergoing renovations at the time of the incident. Fortunately, all construction workers managed to escape the collapse unharmed.

“The collapse occurred at a three-storey building under renovation at 24, Binuyo Street off Ita Faaji Market, Lagos, during a downpour. The few artisans on site escaped unhurt,” the statement read in part.

Adeseye further disclosed that state emergency responders, along with personnel from the Ebute Elefun Fire Station, swiftly arrived at the scene to coordinate rescue efforts.

The head of LSFRS confirmed that recovery operations had been successfully concluded, although the exact cause of the collapse remained undetermined.

Amid expressions of condolences to the victims affected by the building collapse, the Lagos State Building Control Agency attributed blame to the building’s tenants, citing their failure to comply with earlier vacation notices issued regarding the structure.
