Customs to begin distribution of seized food items today

The Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, has announced that the distribution of seized food items will commence on Friday, with a stern warning against resale.

Addressing journalists in Lagos on Thursday, Adeniyi emphasized that the distributed seized food items are not meant for resale. He also declared a ban on customs officers from participating in the distribution process, specifying that the rice would be sold in 25kg bags for N10,000 each.

The Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) had earlier disclosed its plans to directly distribute seized food items to Nigerians, as stated by the National Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Maiwada, in a statement issued on Tuesday.

Explaining the eligibility criteria, Adeniyi stated that eligible individuals must provide a Nigerian Identification Number. He outlined the target groups, which include artisans, teachers, nurses, religious bodies, and other Nigerians within the NCS’s operational areas, aiming to reach them through organized structures for maximum impact.

Adeniyi cautioned against profiteering or exploitation of the initiative, asserting that beneficiaries must understand that the items are not to be resold.

The Customs Comptroller goes on to urge Nigerians to report any instances of misuse or unauthorized resale of the seized food items, reaffirming the NCS’s commitment to transparency and accountability throughout the process.

Emphasizing the temporary nature of the exercise, Adeniyi stressed on its significance as its aimed to address challenges within the economy and to ensure food security.
