Vladimir Putin eyes another 6-year-term as Russia President

Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to announce his candidacy for another six-year term as president, potentially extending his tenure until 2030.

The report comes courtesy of  sources close to the presidential administration, as reported by Kommersant.

While there are various scenarios being considered for Putin’s announcement at an upcoming conference, the final decision rests with the Russian leader himself.

As of now, the Kremlin has not provided an official comment on these speculations.

Vladimir Putin, who assumed the presidency in 1999 when Boris Yeltsin transferred power to him, has already surpassed the leadership duration of any Russian ruler since Josef Stalin, surpassing even Leonid Brezhnev’s 18-year rule.

Although many observers, including diplomats, intelligence officials, and government insiders, anticipate Putin’s intention to remain in power indefinitely, there has been no official confirmation regarding his candidacy for the 2024 presidential election.

In a recent statement, Putin mentioned that he would reveal his plans after the parliament initiates the presidential election process, which is mandated to occur in December by law.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov asserted that if Putin decides to run for president again, he would likely face no competition, suggesting his unparalleled popularity.

However, despite the potential lack of electoral rivals, Putin faces a series of significant challenges, perhaps the most formidable since Mikhail Gorbachev’s era as he grappled with the Soviet Union’s disintegration nearly four decades ago.

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has led to the most significant standoff between Russia and the West since the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962.

Additionally, it has caused substantial external economic disruptions to Russia.

In June, Putin faced a failed uprising led by Yevgeny Prigozhin, one of Russia’s most powerful mercenaries. However, Prigozhin was tragically killed in a plane crash just two months later, bringing an end to the internal threat.
