"They've allowed Erik ten Hag to overrule them" -- Schmeichel

Erik ten Hag and his Manchester United team faced another disappointing defeat against Nottingham Forest, leaving fans and pundits dissecting the team’s performance.

The loss prompted former United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel to voice strong criticism of Antony’s contribution to the game and also of Ten Hag’s influence on the club.

In an interview with South African broadcaster SuperSport, reported by the Daily Mail, Schmeichel suggested that Erik ten Hag, United’s manager, should reconsider Antony’s position in the team.

The United legend expressed concerns about Antony’s impact, stating,

“He doesn’t give much to the team. He frustrates his teammates. It’s really frustrating.”

Highlighting Antony’s lack of direct goal involvement, Schmeichel remarked,

“This is a player that hasn’t scored this season, he’s not made an assist and he’s not scored; it’s like he’s not really understanding the game.” Schmeichel particularly criticized Antony’s approach as a winger, noting his failure to execute expected plays, like crossing from certain areas on the field.

Moreover, Schmeichel raised doubts about the reported £85 million transfer fee that brought Antony to Old Trafford from Ajax.

He questioned the scouting process behind Antony’s signing, expressing concern that the high valuation might not have been justified by his on-field performance.

“It looks like they’ve allowed Erik ten Hag to overrule them, which is worrying because you need strength of leadership at the very top,” Schmeichel remarked, holding the football club responsible for Antony’s high-profile and expensive transfer.

He emphasized that the player should not bear the blame for being brought in as one of the most expensive wide players in the world.
