Super Falcons 'delight', Michelle Alozie on Lauren James' challenge

A nervy game between the Super Falcons of Nigeria and Lionesses of England broke the internet following a reckless moment between Michelle Alozie and Lauren James that resulted in the first red card of the knockout stages.

The Lionesses’ star, Lauren James had stomped on Alozie during a challenge with the right-back in the dying minutes of the game to provoke a sending off of the England international in the eventual 4-2 penalty victory for the English women.

Reacting to the defeat, Alozie noted her surprise in the challenge, but however dismissed holding any grievances against the England international outside the moment the clash occurred.

The officiating referee, Melissa Borjas of Honduras had initially awarded Lauren James a yellow card but rescinded it after a VAR check for a straight red for violent conduct.Speaking to reporters, Michelle Alozie confirmed that she was doing fine despite the harsh tackle on her by the Chelsea women star.

On neutralizing the threat that was Lauren James, Michelle Alozie said;

“It was good for us. James is a really good player. And nullifying her was really big for us. We didn’t want her to move freely and get those shots off that she usually does. It was good for us to have her taken out of the game,”

She added:

“I was a little bit surprised by her reaction to the tackle. I don’t think it was really needed. I’m fine, my butt is fine from her stepping on it! I was kind of confused initially. I didn’t understand what was going on at first. There’s no hard feelings, it’s just a game.”
