La Liga: Why Real Madrid should be scared of Girona

La Liga this season, unlike prior campaigns has developed into quite the spectacle with the arrival of the X element that is Girona.

So far this campaign, the City Football Group owned club, like premier league side, Manchester City, have emerged as serious contenders to challenge the supremacy of Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Sitting joint league leaders with Real Madrid on equal number of points, Girona have been able to brisk past their opponents in the first quarter of the season to amass 45 points, same as their Capital rivals.

Though with a lesser goal difference compared to their points tally with Real Madrid, Girona’s story this season has been one that started like a joke but so far has grown to be something that shouldn’t be laughed off but taken as a serious challenge.

If their 4-2 victory over Barcelona can be considered funny, the 4-3 triumph over Atletico Madrid at the 90th minute should be a wake up call for Doubting Thomases.

It is no longer worth looking at results like this as mere flukes for a side who some may consider as a mid-table side whose goals are to remain within the safe spots of the drop zone this season, but a real threat that is actually capable of winning the La Liga if Real Madrid slips.

It takes some level of mental strength for a team to get over the line, specifically when a Diego Simeone side has to fight their way back from a 3-1 deficit.

For the First time, La Liga has an interesting X-element ready to challenge the supremacy of the big 2.

And for Girona to get the win over them, and most interesting of all, at the 90th minute mark, it should raise eyebrows for Real Madrid and Carlo Ancelotti whose side has gone half the season without a senior striker within its ranks.

Real Madrid have so far managed to get the results and even nick some high scoring games, having an X element like Girona who no one knows what to expect of this season, building the confidence and mental strength, builds more pressure on the Los Blancos.

And whether anyone may want to agree, it is a different pressure to having Barcelona be the ones challenging them.
