Brighton & Hove Albion have revealed that Chelsea paid a whopping £21.5 million in compensation to hire Graham Potter and his backroom staff as their manager in September 2021. The south coast club published their latest financial results on Wednesday, which listed the change in the dugout as one of the “post balance sheet events”.
This is a record fee paid by a Premier League team for a head coach. The previous record was held by Manchester United, who paid £19.6 million to Everton to acquire the services of David Moyes in 2013.
However, Chelsea’s compensation fee for Potter is the second biggest of all time, only behind Bayern Munich’s £22 million payout to bring in Julian Nagelsmann from RB Leipzig in 2021.
Graham Potter signed a five-year contract with Chelsea upon his arrival at Stamford Bridge, which is reportedly worth around £60 million.
However, the 46-year-old has struggled to impose his style on the Blues, who currently sit in 10th place on the Premier League table.
Chelsea had hoped that Potter’s attacking philosophy and emphasis on developing young players would help them regain their status as one of the top teams in England, but their performances this season have been largely inconsistent.
Graham Potter spent just over two years in charge of Brighton before leaving for Chelsea, where he was highly regarded for his work in developing young talent and implementing an attractive style of play.
During his time with the Seagulls, Potter led them to two consecutive 15th-place finishes in the Premier League and reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup in the 2020/21 season.
The compensation fee paid by Chelsea to acquire Potter and his staff highlights the growing importance of top-level coaches in modern football, and the willingness of clubs to invest heavily in their managerial appointments.
