PDP to host hush NEC meeting to address looming threats

As the crisis within the opposition camp continues to simmer, stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are set to convene for a series of pivotal meetings this week, with hopes of addressing pressing issues and charting a path forward.

According to reports, the PDP’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting is scheduled for Thursday, April 18, 2023, pending any unforeseen changes. Preceding this gathering, a caucus meeting is slated for Tuesday, April 16, followed by a session with members of the Board of Trustees (BoT) on Wednesday, April 17.

Insights from party leaders suggest that the agenda for these meetings will encompass a range of contentious topics, including party discipline, preparations for upcoming governorship elections in Edo and Ondo states, and strategies for maintaining internal cohesion.

Moreover, discussions are expected to delve into the sensitive issue of potential mergers with other opposition parties, as well as the role the PDP should assume in such scenarios. Notably, there are indications that the year 2027, though not formally listed on the agenda, may be subtly referenced during deliberations.

A party leader, speaking anonymously to Vanguard, hinted at the significance of 2027 in the party’s long-term planning.

“There are talks in different quarters about how our party should approach 2027 and whether or not there should be a clean break from vestiges of the past,” the source revealed.

“I’m sure you’re also aware of the talks about a possible merger of opposition parties in the country.”

The upcoming meetings are viewed as critical moments for the PDP, offering an opportunity for stakeholders to address internal rifts, strategize for future electoral battles, and navigate the evolving political landscape.
