OpenAI is gearing up to unveil its AI-driven search product, challenging Google‘s dominance in the search engine arena.

According to insider sources, the announcement is slated for Monday, marking a significant escalation in OpenAI’s competition with tech giant Google.

While the exact announcement date is subject to change, this development has not been previously disclosed.

Reports from Bloomberg and the Information indicate that OpenAI, backed by Microsoft, is actively developing a search tool aimed at competing with Google and Perplexity, another AI search startup.

OpenAI declined to comment on the matter.

The timing of the announcement, just a day before the commencement of Google’s annual I/O conference, suggests a strategic move by OpenAI. Google is expected to unveil a range of AI-related products during its event.

OpenAI’s search product is an extension of its flagship ChatGPT, allowing it to extract information directly from the web, complete with citations. ChatGPT, known for its human-like responses to text prompts, has been considered an alternative source for accessing online information.

However, it has faced challenges in providing accurate, real-time data. Previously, ChatGPT was integrated with Microsoft’s Bing for paid subscribers, positioning itself as a competitor to Google’s generative AI features.

Perplexity, founded by a former OpenAI researcher and valued at $1 billion, has gained attention for its AI-native search interface, boasting 10 million monthly active users. In contrast, ChatGPT’s user traffic has fluctuated, prompting OpenAI to seek expansion opportunities.

A previous attempt to integrate real-world information into ChatGPT, known as ChatGPT plugins, was discontinued in April.

The forthcoming announcement underscores OpenAI’s ambition to disrupt the search landscape, setting the stage for heightened competition in the AI-driven search domain.
