Marina Resort, Calabar speedboat cruise leaves 3 students missing

A tragic incident occurred on Saturday, June 24, as a speedboat carrying 14 medical students capsized during a cruise at the Marina Resort in Calabar.

While eleven students have been successfully rescued, three remain missing, prompting an investigation into the incident by Cross River State Governor, Senator (Prince) Bassey Otu.

The medical students, who had gathered in Calabar to participate in the Nigeria Medical Students Association (NIMSA) annual Health Week, were eager to explore the city and embarked on a boat cruise at the popular Marina Resort. Tragically, the boat capsized during the outing, leading to the current search and rescue operation.

Expressing deep sadness, Governor Bassey Otu ordered an immediate investigation into the mishap. In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Emmanuel Ogbeche, the governor expressed concern that three medical students were yet to be found.

He called upon security and rescue agencies, as well as local villagers involved in the operation, to intensify their efforts in locating the missing students and reuniting them with their families.

Governor Otu also expressed disappointment regarding the safety standards at the Marina Resort. He pledged that individuals found guilty of compromising safety regulations would face severe sanctions for their actions.

“The news of a cruise boat mishap at the Marina Resort, a tourist and relaxation destination in Calabar, is saddening and calls for concern not only as your governor but as a parent.

“To imagine that the boat was overcrowded and some of those on it were without life jackets is of even greater concern, and the more reason why the state government will be investigating the incident, and all those found culpable of having compromised on safety standards will face the wrath of the law,” Governor Otu stated.

He emphasized the commitment of his administration to safeguarding the sanctity of life and providing a conducive environment for business, tourism, and peaceful living. The governor underscored that any actions that could undermine these objectives would not be tolerated.

On a positive note, Governor Otu expressed relief that all rescued students, except one, had been discharged from the hospital. He expressed confidence in the recovery of the remaining student, as doctors reported that he is stable and responding well to treatment.

The governor commended the swift response and rescue efforts of the Nigerian Navy personnel and local villagers who intervened to save 11 out of the 14 passengers aboard the ill-fated boat.

As the search for the missing students continues, the community remains hopeful for their safe return.

The incident serves as a tragic reminder of the importance of adhering to safety regulations and ensuring the well-being of all individuals engaged in leisure activities, particularly in popular tourist destinations such as Calabar’s Marina Resort.
