"Here's the truth" -- Gareth Southgate on becoming Man United boss

Could Gareth Southgate be Manchester United’s next manager if he wins the Euros with England this summer?

Amidst swirling speculation linking England manager Gareth Southgate to the managerial position at Manchester United, the Three Lions boss has unequivocally addressed the rumors during a press conference held on Friday.

Reports emerged earlier this week suggesting that United shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe has identified Gareth Southgate as his primary target to assume the reins at Old Trafford this summer.

Southgate’s contract with the English national team is set to expire in December, prompting discussions of a potential extension by the Football Association (FA).

However, Ratcliffe’s reported admiration for Southgate’s managerial prowess with England has fueled speculation that the United hierarchy may be considering him as a successor to the current manager, Erik ten Hag.

Addressing the media ahead of England’s friendly against Brazil on Saturday, Southgate firmly dismissed talks of a potential switch to Manchester United.

“There are two things from my point of view,” asserted Southgate. “One is I’m the England manager. I’ve got one job basically, to try to deliver a European Championship, and the second thing is Manchester United have a manager.”

Expressing his disdain for managerial speculation while a coach is in place, Gareth Southgate emphasized, “I think it is always completely disrespectful when there is a manager in place. I don’t have any time for that sort of thing.”

Amidst the uncertainty surrounding Southgate’s future, Manchester United defender Harry Maguire voiced his support for the England manager to remain in his current role.

When asked about Southgate’s potential continuation beyond the summer, Maguire affirmed, “Yeah, definitely, obviously…If Gareth’s the man to make us be successful then we want him to stay as long as possible.”

Acknowledging Southgate’s significant contribution to England’s progress, Maguire highlighted the manager’s role in fostering success and unity within the squad.
