Don't rest now -- FG to Super Falcons as NFF on the sidelines

The Nigerian Super Falcons nicked one over the Matildas of Australia in the Women’s World Cup second group stage match with a 3-2 win to send the Falcons top of the group ahead of their final fixture against Ireland.

In the celebration, the Federal Government didn’t fail to pass a word or two to the Super Falcons in their victory lap.

According to the Bola Ahmed Tinubu government, they reminded the nation’s female team not to rest on their oars  despite the 3-2 tie against the host nation.

In praising the team for its efforts in coming out victors in a tense game, they urged Randy Waldrum’s side to bring in their A – game into the next game, with the country standing firmly behind the team.

Alhaji Ismaila Abubakar, Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Sports and Youth Development made the demands in a statement issued by Mohammed Manga, Director Press in the ministry on Thursday in Abuja following the victory.

The Perm Sec also commended the Super Falcons for their brilliant performance to defeat co-hosts Australia in Brisbane despite being the under dog team in the fixture.

He said, “We have followed your games and want to thank you for making the nation proud, thus putting a smile on the faces of Nigerians.

“We commend you, your coaches and the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) for the good job done so far.

“You cannot afford to rest on your oars, take the next game against the Republic of Ireland with full determination to succeed as you took your first two games.

“Give it your very best, which is your 100 per cent assurance to win. We are solidly behind you.”

Celebrations and congratulations aside, the Nigerian Football Federation still has a dark cloud covering it over rumors of the nation’s women team and the coach, Randy Waldrum being owed wages.
Former England international and Arsenal legend, Ian Wright didn’t fail to echo such sentiments after the Super Falcons’ victory as he tweeted a message to call on the attention of the NFF.
With all the talks of the Ladies not giving on to the oars and putting in their best ahead of their next fixture, the NFF also should be looking into not giving into its oars and putting in their best efforts to ensure the women and their coach are paid their wages.
