Controversial Referee, Mike Dean signs with Sky Sports

Mike Dean is one name premier league football fans may not want to put in their good books judging from many of his controversial decisions on the pitch side or with VAR calls in recent times. In fact, many fans were thrilled when the referee announced his retirement from being a match-day official.

The renowned English football referee, has embarked on a new chapter in his career by joining Sky Sports. Dean recently bid farewell to his 28-year stint as an official, which included serving as a video assistant referee (VAR) with the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL).

However, the 55-year-old has wasted no time in securing his next opportunity, signing with Sky to be a part of their popular Gillette Soccer Saturday coverage in the upcoming season.

Sky Sports announced that Mike Dean will provide “match official insight” on the show, a role similar to that of Peter Walton with BT Sport, now known as TNT Sports.

The broadcaster’s confirmation of Dean’s arrival coincided with the official announcement that Simon Thomas would replace Jeff Stelling as the host of the long-running football results program.

Stelling, who anchored Soccer Saturday for nearly two decades, revealed his departure plans at the end of the 2022/23 season.

With Dean’s addition, Soccer Saturday continues to undergo significant changes, including the departures of Matt Le Tissier, Phil Thompson, and Charlie Nicholas. The current panel includes Paul Merson, Clinton Morrison, Michael Dawson, Sue Smith, Kris Boyd, and Tim Sherwood.

Dean’s foray into television work is not entirely new, as he previously collaborated with beIN Sports during the 2022 World Cup.

Expressing his thoughts on joining Soccer Saturday, Mike Dean remarked,

“It feels a bit surreal to be a part of such a well-loved show, but I can’t wait to join the team. With all the technology available in today’s game, I think it’s crucial that fans understand why decisions have been made, even if they don’t agree with them!”

During his career, Dean officiated over 500 matches in the Premier League, gaining attention for his charismatic and expressive style of refereeing.

As he transitions from the pitch to the TV studio, fans can anticipate Dean’s expert analysis and unique insights on match officiating, adding a fresh perspective to the Soccer Saturday experience.
