Why I moved to Saudi Arabia -- Koulibaly opens up

Kalidou Koulibaly moving to Chelsea last season was the talk of town for the Premier League, but a year later, the Senegalese has taken refuge at Saudi Arabia in hopes for a fresh start, and a change of scenery from Europe.

The move to Chelsea despite being the hype ended up an underwhelming one for both parties involved following a disastrous season that ended with the Blues finishing in 12th place, and Kalidou Koulibaly having one of the worst seasons of his career.

The esteemed defender and former Chelsea player on his move to Saudi Arabia has provided an honest and heartfelt interview in which he sheds light on his recent big-money move to Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia.

The 32-year-old Senegal international expressed his excitement about joining the Saudi Pro League side and emphasized his desire to support his native Senegal through his new contract.

In his interview with Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport, Koulibaly expressed his happiness as a Muslim, stating that he feels he is arriving in the right country.

He also spoke of his enthusiasm for being part of an evolving league and his hopes of contributing to the sporting history of Saudi Arabia and Al Hilal. Koulibaly acknowledged the significance of the substantial contract he has signed with Al Hilal, emphasizing its importance to him.

Furthermore, Koulibaly emphasized the positive impact his reported £300,000 per-week wage will have on his family and the people living in villages in Senegal.

He expressed his intention to support the social activities of his Capitaine du Coeur association and his plans to invest in various projects, including the construction of a pediatric clinic in the village of Ngano, where his parents were born and married. Koulibaly’s goal is to provide better healthcare access for people who currently have to travel long distances for medical assistance.

The talented defender highlighted his dedication to helping young people, stating that they are the future of both Senegal and the world.

Koulibaly outlined his vision to invest in the development and support of young individuals, intending to create opportunities for them and contribute to their success.

“I had no guarantees to get regular playing time [at Chelsea]. I was always professional but I don’t like to sit on the bench doing nothing,” he said.

“I prefer a place where I am wanted and at the centre of the project and can be an example for young players. The Premier League is fantastic and there are great players.”

Koulibaly also discussed the reasons behind his departure from Chelsea, citing a lack of regular playing time as a significant factor.

While maintaining his professionalism during his time at the English club, he expressed a preference for a place where he feels wanted and central to the team’s project. Despite his admiration for the Premier League and its exceptional players, Koulibaly desired a role where he could be an example for young players and make a significant impact on the pitch.

With his move to Al Hilal, Koulibaly aims to leave a lasting legacy both on and off the field. He aspires to make a positive difference in the lives of his family, fellow Senegalese citizens, and the wider West African community.

As he joins his new teammates in the coming days, the defender’s commitment to his Muslim faith, his desire for social impact, and his footballing ambitions will undoubtedly contribute to Al Hilal’s quest for success in the Saudi Pro League.
