Romelu Lukaku branded cult figure in Manchester after UCL final

It is very rare to see a striker receive praise for their performance by the opposition fans but for Inter star, Romelu Lukaku, he makes the exception as he receives legendary status at the Etihad.

Manchester City fans took to social media to humorously declare Romelu Lukaku as a club legend after the Inter Milan striker missed a significant chance during the Champions League final.

Lukaku, brought on as a substitute in the second half to replace the injured Edin Dzeko, found himself in a pivotal position during the match. However, with just minutes remaining and Inter trailing 1-0 to Manchester City, the Belgian forward failed to convert a header from close range. City goalkeeper Ederson made a crucial save, blocking Lukaku’s attempt with his knee.

Inter Milan had several other opportunities to equalize, including a rebounded header inadvertently blocked by Romelu Lukaku earlier in the game and a challenging low effort that Lukaku fired through the legs of a defender, only to be stopped by Ederson once again.

Amid City’s eventual 1-0 victory, securing their first-ever Champions League title, fans took to Twitter to playfully highlight Lukaku’s missed chances and jokingly bestowed upon him the status of a club legend.

On the social media platform, one City fan humorously quipped, “Romelu Lukaku is a Man City legend.” Another supporter chimed in, stating, “Lukaku is a Man City legend despite never even playing for them.” Further tweets from fans referenced Lukaku’s missed opportunities while acknowledging the heroic role played by City’s goalkeeper, Ederson.

Pep Guardiola’s team celebrated their triumph, adding the Champions League title to their domestic successes, completing a remarkable treble. Guardiola last won the European crown in 2011 with Barcelona against Manchester United.

Meanwhile, Lukaku’s future remains uncertain. While he is expected to return to Chelsea after the Champions League final, it remains to be seen whether he will feature for the Blues in the upcoming season.

While the City fans’ playful sentiments towards Lukaku’s missed chances may not reflect his true standing in the club’s history, it highlights the lighthearted banter and camaraderie among football supporters, even in the wake of significant matches.
