"Real reason I rejected West Ham" -- Harry Maguire

Manchester United defender, Harry Maguire breaks silence on rejecting the move to West Ham United in the summer.

According to the English Centre Back, it was not his personal decisions that broke deal as he contradicts the popular consensus that had circulated the media after the deal fell through.

In a well known transfer move, West Ham had expressed interest in acquiring Harry Maguire during the summer transfer window alongside fellow teammate, Scott McTominay, with West Ham manager David Moyes interested in the England international.

However, just before the deal could move into play, West Ham pulled out from the deal.

According to the Guardian, this was because the Hammers had had grown impatient, with reports stating the delay having to do with Harry Maguire seeking a financial settlement to facilitate his exit from the club.

In the end, West Ham shifted their focus elsewhere, securing the services of former Arsenal defender Konstantinos Mavropanos from Stuttgart.

Additionally, their new signing Edson Alvarez, primarily a defensive midfielder, possesses the versatility to fill in at central defense if needed.

Maguire, on the other hand, remained at Manchester United, with the Centre Back only starting one game under manager, Erik ten Hag this season, which was the 2-1 comeback versus Brentford.

Ahead of international duties with England, Harry Maguire opened up on why the West Ham move failed.

Maguire revealed to the press that it was a deal that depended on not just his camp but between West Ham and Manchester United.

The former Leicester City man said;

“The actual opportunity to go to West Ham wasn’t really agreed between both clubs and myself, so it wasn’t just my chance to say ‘yes’ and I’m going.

“The actual opportunity wasn’t there because we didn’t get far enough down the line with it. West Ham is a massive club, but my focus remains on Manchester United.

“I want to fight for my place, but, of course, game time is really important to me.”
