Meta expands cross-posting feature globally for Instagram, Facebook, Threads
Meta has officially launched a new cross-posting feature that allows users to share content from Instagram and Facebook directly to Threads, the social networking platform competing with X (formerly Twitter).
After months of testing, Meta confirmed that the feature is now available globally in all regions where Threads operates.
This new capability aligns with Meta’s broader strategy of maximizing content sharing across its app ecosystem. For years, Meta has allowed cross-posting between Instagram and Facebook, enabling users to easily share content between the two platforms. In 2023, the company experimented with displaying suggested Threads posts on Instagram and Facebook, a feature users can now disable if they choose.
By integrating Threads more closely with Instagram and Facebook, Meta aims to further boost the growth of Threads, which recently surpassed 200 million active users.
How to Cross-Post Instagram Images to Threads
The new cross-posting feature on Instagram, initially tested in May, is an opt-in experience. Users need to enable the Threads sharing option when posting an image on Instagram. When they cross-post, the Instagram caption becomes the text for the Threads post, and hashtags are converted to plain text.
Users can choose to cross-post on a per-post basis or set up automatic sharing to always post to Threads. This feature is available to all users globally on both iOS and Android devices. However, it’s important to note that Instagram Reels cannot be cross-posted to Threads.
How to Cross-Post Threads Posts to Facebook
Testing for Threads-to-Facebook cross-posting began in late February. Similar to Instagram cross-posting, users can enable the Threads option when creating a post on Facebook. This feature applies to text and link posts but not videos. It is available on Android, iOS, and in all regions where Threads is accessible.
The Purpose of Cross-Posting
The Meta cross-posting to Threads feature is particularly useful for content creators, social media managers, and business owners who want to streamline their content-sharing process. Instead of crafting separate posts for each platform, they can now reach multiple audiences simultaneously with a single post, saving time and effort.
However, users should consider whether cross-posting is appropriate for all content. Some posts may not translate well across platforms. For example, an Instagram post with multiple hashtags might look awkward on Threads, where hashtags appear as plain text. While Threads does support tags, it doesn’t use the hash symbol, which could affect the post’s appearance.
