Majekodunmi Fasheke, popularly known as Majek Fashek was born March 1963 and died 1st of June 2020. He was a Nigerian singer-songwriter and guitarist.

 

EARLY LIFE
Majekodunmi Fasheke was born in Benin City to an Edo mother and an Ijesha father in the year  1963, but identified mainly with his Benin roots Various translations of his name Fasheke “Ifa-kii-she-eke’’ include “high priest who does not lie”, “powers of miracles” and “(system/medium of) divination does not lie”  After his parents separated Fashek remained in Benin City with his mother, and later joined the choir in his local Aladura church where he learned to play the trumpet and guitar whilst composing songs for the choir.

EDUCATION
Majekodunmi Fasheke’s education background is not confirmed, but it was written that­­- he learned to play the guitar while in Secondary school and soon joined a band, Jah Stix, going on to play in Clubs in the capital city of Lagos.


CAREER
Majekodunmi Fasheke is a Nigerian reggae singer, song writer and Guitarist who attracted international attention when his song ‘Send down the rain’ seemed to coax a rainstorm, ending one of the worst draughts in Nigeria’s history and earning him the title ‘Musical Prophet’ and ‘Rain maker’.

His debut solo album ‘ Prisoner of Conscience’ released in 1988 sold more than 200,000 copies in Nigeria alone.

In the early eighties, Fashek who at the time went by the stage name ‘Rajesh Kanal’ joined the group ‘Jastix’ with ‘McRoy Gregg’ and lead singer ‘Black Rice’. They were best known as the in-house band on the show Music Paranoma on NTA Benin. The show disbanded in 1988 and Fashek now known as Majek signed with ‘Tabansi Records’ and began a solo career.

In 1989, Fashek released the ‘I&I experience’. He left the Tabansi Record and signed to CBS Nigeria in the early 1990s and released ‘So Long Too Long’. In 1990, he was signed to Interscope Records and released the critically acclaimed album ‘Spirit of Love’. He moved on to Mango records because they were more accustomed to marketing reggae internationally. His first album for the company includes a cover version of Bob Marley’s ‘Redemption song’. He has recorded several albums for different labels since then.

He staged a comeback to the music stage after 30 years with a remake of his old classic ‘Holy Ghost’ which is now called ‘Take over me’ featuring 2face Idibia.

Fashek played a supporting role in the 2000 Nollywood movie ‘Mark of the Beast’ and starred in a commercial for non-alcoholic beverage ‘Dia Malt’ In 2016.

He performed a comedy show in Lagos, Nigeria with over ten thousand people in attendance and in December 2016, he contributed to the song ‘ We are not afraid’ to a video featuring 200 celebrities to raise funds for the International Rescue Committee (IRC) and Human Rights Watch (HRW).

In a chat with Showtime in 2018, he openly condemned Buhari’s government and stated that he could do better than the current people in Government in Nigeria if given the opportunity. 


FAMILY
Majek Fashek was married to Rita Fashek who inspired the song “Without You”. The couple had four children together, but later divorced.

PERSONAL LIFE
In 2015, it was revealed that Majek Fashek was bankrupt and battling drug addiction. After admitting that he needed help, he was admitted into a drug rehabilitation centre in Abuja where he recovered and returned to music.

DEATH
Besides his struggle with drug addiction, other health conditions required Fashek’s hospitalisation on several occasions. He was rumoured dead in September 2019 but his manager quelled the rumours, confirming that Fashek had indeed been critically ill, hospitalized at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, London in the UK, and in dire need of financial assistance. Billionaire businessman and philanthropist Femi Otedola pledged to cover all the singer’s medical expenses. Fashek died in his sleep on the 1st of June 2020 in New York City. He battled and died of oesophageal cancer.

 

ACIEVIEVEMENT
In the Year 1989, Majek Fashek won six PMAN awards including Album of the Year Song of the Year Reggae Artist of the Year.
