Kano Assembly under tight security for Emirates bill vote

Armed operatives from the Nigeria Police and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) took strategic positions around the Kano State House of Assembly complex on Thursday as the Assembly reconvened to vote on the contentious amended Emirates Council Bill.

The heightened security presence comes as the Assembly prepares to vote on the Kano State Emirates Council (Amendment number 2) Law, 2024. The bill, which successfully passed its first reading on Wednesday, has sparked significant tension across the state.

Sponsored by Majority Leader Lawan Hussaini Chediyar Yan Gurasa of the Dala State Constituency, the proposed legislation seeks to amend the original law that restructured the Emirate system in Kano. The initial law, enacted on December 5, 2019, by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, created five new emirates, significantly altering the traditional power dynamics and administrative framework of the emirate council.

Current deliberations suggest a potential reversal of these changes, with speculation about the possible disbanding of the newly established emirates and the reinstatement of the deposed Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi.

As the Assembly session progresses, tension remains palpable across the state, reflecting the deep-seated divisions and strong sentiments surrounding the issue. Supporters and opponents of the bill have expressed strong opinions, suggesting that whichever way the Assembly decides will likely elicit strong reactions from the populace.
