"I tried to kill myself on many occasions" -- Comedian Destalker

Nigerian comedian Oghenekowhoyan Onaibe Desmond, widely known as Destalker, has bravely shared his struggles with depression and three attempts to take his own life, shedding light on the dark realities faced by many in the entertainment industry.

Destalker disclosed how his journey from graduating with a degree in Public Administration to struggling to find employment pushed him into a state of despair.

With job opportunities scarce, he resorted to becoming a commercial motorcyclist, known locally as “okada,” in a bid to make ends meet.

The comedian revealed that the pressure from family expectations and the relentless pursuit of financial stability weighed heavily on him, exacerbating his mental health struggles. He shared his deeply personal story during the latest episode of the Afrobeats Podcast, offering a glimpse into the challenges he faced behind the scenes of his comedic persona.

Reflecting on his darkest moments, Destalker acknowledged attempting suicide three times, underscoring the depths of his despair and hopelessness.

However, he expressed a profound realization that emerged from his struggles – the belief that suicidal thoughts often indicate that a breakthrough or miracle is imminent.

“I think nobody has heard this part of me,” Destalker confessed. “That was when I realized that even I can’t take my life. I now believed that when you’re suicidal, your miracle is close.”

Despite grappling with immense challenges, Destalker credits his colleague, Ajebo, for being instrumental in his journey to success within the comedy industry.

Ajebo’s support and mentorship facilitated Destalker’s first major breakthrough, offering a glimmer of hope amidst his darkest moments.
