"He deserved it" -- Erik ten Hag speaks on Harry Maguire

Manchester United boss, Erik ten Hag had quite the praise for forgotten defender, Harry Maguire who produced a man of the match performance to deliver all 3 points against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane.

Harry Maguire’s performance in the tie also forced out an emotional response from the former Manchester United captain in the post-match interview after being awarded Player of the Match.

Harry Maguire has endured quite the challenging year, struggling for first-team opportunities since Erik ten Hag took over as manager in May the previous year.

Falling behind the likes of Lisandro Martinez, Victor Lindelof, and Raphael Varane in the pecking order at Old Trafford, Maguire understandably had his captaincy stripped away.

During the summer transfer window, he was strongly linked with moves to West Ham and Aston Villa. However, he remained resolute in his commitment to fighting for his place despite ongoing speculation surrounding his future.

Maguire’s perseverance seems to be paying off as the 30-year-old has started to find his form.

He was granted his first Premier League start of the season for Manchester United in a game against Brentford on October 7th, which they won thanks to a late brace from Scott McTominay.

On Saturday night, Erik ten Hag included Maguire in the starting lineup for their clash with Sheffield United.

Maguire delivered an impressive performance at Bramall Lane, recording three clearances, three blocks, and an 82% pass accuracy.

After the final whistle, he received recognition for his efforts alongside goalscorer Diogo Dalot.

Manager Erik ten Hag had nothing but praise for Maguire following his Player of the Match display.

In his post-match interview with Sky Sports, he commented,

“I think it was deserved, and he played a very good game.

“He showed personality and played very good football, reading the game very well. I am happy with this performance from him.”
