Immediate past Anambra governor, Willie Obiano, has been granted bail following the statement released not long ago by the Chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Abdulrasheed Bawa.

The Governor who still faces allegations of 42 billion naira misappropriation, spent only 96 hours in EFCC custody despite his presumed attempt to flee the country to the U.S via the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos State.

Bawa explained while addressing journalists amid preparations for the 5th Annual General Assembly meeting of the Network of National Anti-Corruption Institutions in Abuja on Monday, that the commission was awaiting his perfection of Obiano’s bail.

When he was asked about the reason for the commission to still keep the former governor in its custody, more than the permitted time frame according to the constitution, Bawa said that there is “Nothing political about the arrest of the former Anambra State Governor, Wille Obiano. He has been granted bail.”

“There is nothing political about the investigation. You know what the EFCC stands for. “We investigate crimes, we look at people that have committed crimes and we link it up together and then we go to court.

“That is all we have been doing and that is what we will continue to do. “We have been accused of media trial. But we will continue to do our investigations professionally, ” Bawa said.
