“Decrease Unilag Tuition fee” SERAP Threatens Management

University of Lagos  have reportedly  increased its tuition from about N20,000 to over N100,000 depending on the course of study and the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has threatened to sue the management if it fails to reverse the recent hike in tuition fees.

The organisation said this on Wednesday on its X (formerly Twitter) handle, describing the increment of tuition fees as unlawful.It, therefore, called on the school management to return to the previous fees.

“The management of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) must immediately reverse the unlawful increase in tuition fees for students, reportedly from N19,000 to over N190,000. We’ll see in court if the fees are not reversed within 48 hours,” the organisation said.

The new tuition ranges from N100,750 to N190,250 depending on whether the course of study requires laboratory or studio work or if the student is in the college of medicine.

This has generated a lot of uproar from the students and other civil society organisations who felt that the hike in the tuition fees would make life harder for Nigerians who are already in economic hardships due to the removal of fuel subsidy by the Tinubu Government.

The students of the school alongside activists have also staged protests against the hike.

It was recently reported how personnel of the Lagos State Police Command shot at students of the school and members of the National Association of Nigerian Students during one of the protests.

The police also some students and activists but they were later released.

Earlier on Wednesday, the police deployed personnel to the school, saying it was necessary to prevent a breakdown of law and order.

However, according to students, it is to prevent them from expressing their displeasure over the arbitrary increase in tuition fees.
