Chelsea Set To Sign New Goalie Next Season

Premier League giants Chelsea have reportedly held discussions with the agent of Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel over a potential move this summer. The Blues are said to be in the market for a new goalkeeper ahead of next season, with doubts growing over the future of their current first-choice shot-stopper, Edouard Mendy.

According to German outlet Sport1, Chelsea have identified Kobel as a prime target and are keen to sign him in the upcoming transfer window. The report also suggests that Manchester United are also keeping tabs on the 25-year-old Swiss international.

Kobel has been a standout performer for Dortmund since his arrival from Stuttgart for €15 million last summer. He has made 29 appearances for the club in all competitions this season, helping them reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Chelsea are believed to have held talks with Kobel’s agent in London before Dortmund’s recent trip to Stamford Bridge for their Champions League last-16 tie. It remains to be seen whether a deal can be struck between the two clubs, but the Blues are said to be prepared to offload Mendy if they are successful in their pursuit of Kobel.

Mendy, who joined Chelsea from French side Rennes last summer, has been a solid performer for the Blues this season. However, reports suggest that the club hierarchy are growing increasingly concerned about his inconsistency. The Senegalese has not played in the squad under new manager, Graham Potter this season, with Kepa the preferred choice.

Chelsea are known to be keen to bolster their options in goal, with Kepa Arrizabalaga and Edouard Mendy still in the club. The addition of Kobel would provide much-needed competition for both goal keepers, as well as a long-term solution between the sticks for Graham Potter’s side.
