“It’ll take a lot of money” — Dortmund ready to cut losses on Sancho
The saying ‘Never accept your ex back’, may ring true for Bundesliga side, Borussia Dortmund who are reportedly having second thoughts about the return of Jadon Sancho.
Borussia Dortmund is reportedly not planning to extend the stay of Manchester United star Jadon Sancho beyond this summer due to financial constraints.
Sancho, who enjoyed a successful spell at Borussia Dortmund between 2017 and 2021, made a high-profile move to Manchester United for a reported fee of €85 million.
However, the winger’s relationship with Manchester United coach Erik Ten Hag soured in 2023, leading to his expulsion from the team after refusing to apologize for publicly criticizing the coach.
In a bid to revive his football career, Manchester United agreed to loan Sancho back to Borussia Dortmund, with reports suggesting a buy option was included in the deal.
Despite Sancho’s return to Germany, his stint has not yielded the desired results. The 23-year-old has made seven Bundesliga appearances since his arrival on January 11, 2024, providing two assists.
However, his performance has not convinced Borussia Dortmund to pursue a permanent deal, primarily due to his substantial weekly wages, rumored to exceed £250,000.
Borussia Dortmund’s sporting director, Sebastian Kehl, addressed the situation in an interview with German TV channel Sport1, stating,
“In the end, it will take money, a lot of money. Definitely more than we have at the moment.”
Kehl acknowledged the significant fee Manchester United paid for Sancho’s transfer and speculated on United’s potential interest in either recalling him or seeking a suitable transfer deal.
Kehl added, “Whether that also makes sense for us will be the next topic,” indicating Borussia Dortmund’s deliberation over the financial viability of retaining Jadon Sancho beyond the loan spell.
