Clubs Will Want To Avoid Chelsea In Champions League -- Merson

Borussia Dortmund head coach Edin Terzic appeared to take a dig at Chelsea’s spending after his team’s 2-0 defeat to the English side in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League round of 16 tie on Tuesday night.

Chelsea secured the win at Stamford Bridge thanks to goals from Raheem Sterling and Kai Havertz, advancing to the quarter-finals of the competition on a 2-1 aggregate score line. The Blues had lost the first leg 1-0 in Germany last month.

The defeat marked Dortmund’s first loss in 2023, and Terzic felt his team had done more than enough to compete with Chelsea, who have spent over £600m on players since the summer.

“We lost three players who have been in form in recent weeks. But that is part of the game. We adapted well. We have enough quality in the team, and that is the good thing,” Terzic said.

“If you see before the season, if you compare both teams… But I think if you look at these two games, this is what we want. We don’t want to compete with Chelsea in the transfer market. We want to compete with them on a matchday, and I think we did it twice.”

Despite the defeat,  Borussia Dortmund had several chances to score in the game, but they were ultimately unable to convert them into goals. Chelsea’s solid defensive record continued, with the team securing their fifth consecutive clean sheet in all competitions.

The Blues’ recent form has improved under the guidance of new manager Graham Potter, with the team playing a more attacking style of football and creating more chances.

The victory against Borussia Dortmund marked their second win in two matches, and they will now turn their attention to their upcoming fixtures against tough Premier League opposition.
