Kyiv attack: Zelensky calls for strong response from allies

In a powerful statement from Warsaw on Monday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy vowed retaliation against Russia after a missile strike claimed the lives of at least 29 people and damaged a children’s hospital in Kyiv.

As global leaders prepare to gather in Washington for a NATO summit starting Tuesday, Zelenskiy urged Kyiv’s allies to deliver a robust response to Russia’s latest aggression. Opening his press conference with a minute’s silence for the victims, Zelenskiy emphasized the need for greater resilience and a decisive reaction from the international community.

“I would also like to hear from our partners about a greater resilience and a strong response to the blow that Russia has once again dealt to our people, to our land, to our children,” he declared. “We will retaliate against these people. We will deliver a powerful response to Russia, for sure. The question to our partners is: can they respond?”

Request for Offensive Capabilities

Zelenskiy highlighted Ukraine’s desire to utilize weapons provided by its allies to target the origins of Russian attacks. “I think we would really like to receive such a decision from our partners,” he said, emphasizing the need for offensive capabilities to preempt further strikes. “Or they would like to see the strikes again.”

Strengthening Air Defenses and Energy Security

Zelenskiy called for concrete measures from Western partners to bolster Ukraine’s air defenses and protect its critical energy infrastructure, which has been a frequent target of Russian attacks. He announced that Kyiv is initiating an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council in response to the latest assault, seeking international support and intervention.

Poland’s Role and NATO Coordination

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk expressed solidarity with Ukraine, discussing plans to support its energy needs ahead of the winter months. Tusk also suggested that Poland is open to the idea of intercepting Russian missiles targeting NATO territory while they are still over Ukrainian soil, highlighting the necessity for clear cooperation within NATO.

“We need clear cooperation within NATO here, because such actions require such joint NATO responsibility… we are open to it. Logic indicates that this would absolutely be a more effective action,” Tusk stated.

The newly signed security pact with Poland is the 21st agreement Kyiv has forged with countries including the United States, Britain, France, and Germany. These alliances reflect a concerted effort to strengthen Ukraine’s defense capabilities and international support network amidst ongoing hostilities.
