What Manchester United legends said after derby defeat

It was quite the tough one to take for Manchester United legends, Rio Ferdinand and Gary Neville following their team’s humiliating defeat to next door neighbors, Manchester City at the Etihad despite going 1-0 up in the first half.

Following the eventual 3-1 defeat, both Manchester United legends have reacted to what they feel went wrong in the derby clash.

Despite taking an early lead in the first half, Manchester United’s performance faltered, resulting in a comprehensive defeat to Pep Guardiola’s side.

Reacting to the match, Rio Ferdinand singled out three players whom he believed performed admirably despite the team’s overall poor display.

Ferdinand highlighted goalkeeper Andre Onana, along with defenders Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans, as the standout performers for Manchester United. He commended their efforts, acknowledging their contributions despite the team conceding three goals.

“Jonny Evans’ performance, Varane’s performance, Onana’s performance, those three, even though we still conceded three goals today, the two centre-backs and the goalkeeper, I thought for large parts, were our best players.”

Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville, on the other hand, criticized defender Victor Lindelof for his role in Phil Foden’s stunning equalizer. Neville pointed out that Lindelof failed to effectively defend against Foden, allowing him space to score a remarkable goal.

The defeat leaves Manchester United in 6th position in the Premier League standings, with 44 points from 27 games.

Neville emphasized the importance of upcoming fixtures for both Manchester United and their rivals, stating that they would provide a clear indication of each team’s title aspirations.

On the premier league title race, Gary Neville says:

“I can’t wait for these next couple of games because we will find out really what these teams are about.

“City are the barometer, that’s who they have to try and knock off the perch. That’s what you have to beat them – you can’t say ‘well City might drop points at that ground’ if you’re not beating them yourself. “You have to beat them if you’re Liverpool and Arsenal,”
