Tottenham defeats Manchester City, gifts Liverpool 22-point lead

Tottenham Hotspur has defeated wasteful Manchester City, courtesy goals from debutant Steve Bergwijn and Heung-Min Son.

In an exciting encounter high on drama, Pep Guardiola’s Man City peltered Tottenham’s goal and should have taken the lead minutes from a VAR-awarded penalty kick five minutes before halftime.

But Ilkay Gundogan’s kick was saved by Hugo Lloris who also prevented Sterling from tucking the rebound.

The duo of Sergio Aguero and Riyad Mahrez also missed an open goal before Jose Mourinho’s men turned the game on its head following a red card for City’s Oleksandr Zinchenko.

Minutes after Zinchenko got sent off for a second bookable offence, Tottenham opened scoring with their first shot of the game on 63 minutes through debutant Steven Bergwijn.

The 22-year-old Dutch international, who was recently signed from PSV Eindhoven, controlled Lucas Moura’s pass before volleying Tottenham into an unlikely lead, becoming the 250th player and 13th Dutchman to score on his EPL debut.

Nine minutes later, Spurs doubled their lead through Heung-Min Son’s deflected strike.

The South Korean’s shot from 18 yards took a slight deflection off Fernandinho before finding the bottom corner of the net.

The win means Tottenham move into fifth position, just five points off a top four position, while City stay second but are 22 points behind runaway undefeated leaders, Liverpool, who hammered Southampton 4-0 on Saturday, thanks to a Mohammed Salah brace.

The 22-point margin is the highest in EPL history.

…Nobody wants fourth position

Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United all drew over the weekend to make the fourth position, the last slot for a place in next season’s Uefa Champions League, wide open.

Frank Lampard’s Chelsea were pegged back by third-placed Leicester City 2-2, with Antony Rudiger’s header ensuring the Blues left the King Power stadium with a point.

Manchester United could not capitalize as they were held to a goalless draw by Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Arsenal also faltered, scrapping a goalless draw at Burnley.
