There Are So Many Reasons Why Liverpool Lost –Michael Owen

Former Liverpool player and current BT Sport pundit, Michael Owen, has weighed in on the reasons behind the club’s disappointing season following their 5-2 loss to Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday.

Real Madrid’s goals from Vinicius, Eder Militao and Karim Benzema secured their victory over Liverpool at Anfield.

This result adds to Liverpool’s difficulties this season, having already been eliminated from both the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup, and currently sitting in eighth position on the Premier League table.

Owen  however, argued that the team’s decline this season could not be attributed to a single issue, as there are many contributing factors.

“In the COVID-19 hit season, Liverpool lost six in a row here at Anfield, which was unprecedented,” Owen said. “Every Liverpool fan will have different reasons. Some will say the ownership. It is never one thing. Football isn’t like that. You have injuries at the start with big players out, a lack of confidence, maybe a lack of investment in midfield. There are so many reasons why you could pick holes. They have had this before, and they bounced back.”

Liverpool’s management will now look to regroup and focus on the second leg against Real Madrid, which will be held at the Santiago Bernabeu next month.

They will need to turn things around quickly in order to progress in the tournament and salvage their season, with Klopp’s side hoping to recreate the success they have had in recent years.
