Service Chiefs Arrive at National Assembly for Senate Confirmation

The newly appointed Service Chiefs in Nigeria arrived at the National Assembly on Thursday to undergo the confirmation process for their appointments in accordance with parliamentary rules.

The four top security Chiefs were nominated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and their names were subsequently sent to the Senate for confirmation.

The Service Chiefs are:

Major General Christopher G Musa – Chief of Defence Staff

Major General T.A Lagbaja – Chief of Army Staff

Rear Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla – Chief Naval Staff

Air Vice Marshal H. B. Abubakar – Chief of Air Staff

The distinguished military officials arrived at the National Assembly Complex at approximately 10:00 am, well in advance of their scheduled appointment at 11:00 am.

Senate President Godswill Obot Akpabío recognized their presence during the plenary session.

Senator Michael Bamidele Opeyemi, the Senate Leader, moved a motion to acknowledge the presence of the Service Chiefs, and the Senate President suspended the rules in order to address their confirmation.

The confirmation process is a crucial step in formalizing the appointments of the Service Chiefs, who are responsible for overseeing the country’s defense and security operations.

By seeking confirmation from the Senate, the government ensures that the appointed individuals possess the necessary qualifications and are suitable for their roles.

Opeyemi said: “That the Senate do consider the request of Mr President and Commander-in -Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on the confirmation of the nomination of Service Chiefs.”.

The visitors to the upper legislative Chamber took turns to introduce themselves before the Chamber dissolved into a Committee of the whole behind closed doors.
