PSG facing disciplinary action for anti-Gay chants
Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) is facing disciplinary action as four of their players have been handed one-match bans for their participation in homophobic chants during a Ligue 1 match against Marseille at the Parc des Princes last month.
The Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) confirmed the sanctions on Thursday, shedding light on the incident that marred the game.
During the match, PSG fans were heard directing anti-gay chants towards the Marseille team, with reports from French news outlet L’Equipe suggesting that PSG players were also involved in the offensive chanting.
As a result, the LFP has taken action by imposing one-match suspensions on the offending players, which will take effect on October 10.
Additionally, they have decided to close the Auteuil stand at the Parc des Princes for two matches as part of the consequences for the incident.
The four PSG players who have been handed suspensions are Randal Kolo Muani, Ousmane Dembele, Achraf Hakimi, and Layvin Kurzawa.
The club responded to the disciplinary measures in a statement, expressing their regret over what they perceive as an excessive and collective punishment.
PSG emphasized their ongoing efforts to engage in dialogue and prevention activities with various associations, institutions, and fans to combat such issues.
In response to the incident, the players involved have also issued apologies, acknowledging the impact of their actions on the public, particularly young fans who look up to them.
In social media posts, they admitted to getting “carried away by the euphoria” of the victory but expressed sincere regret for their inappropriate words.
They vowed to strive for better behavior in the future, aiming to set a more exemplary standard.
