Jos, the capital of Plateau State, was engulfed in panic on Wednesday following a violent clash between security operatives and traders, which resulted in one security officer accidentally shooting and killing his colleague. Five other individuals were also injured in the altercation.

The incident occurred during an operation led by the Jos Metropolitan Development Board (JMDB) in collaboration with security forces, aimed at clearing illegal traders from the area.

According to reports, the clash began when security agents attempted to disperse the traders, who responded by throwing stones at them.

In the midst of the chaos, one of the security personnel fired a warning shot intended to scare off the traders.

Tragically, the bullet struck an Inspector in the head, killing him instantly.

This incident comes in the wake of Executive Order Number 003 issued by the state government, which bans the indiscriminate display of wares on roads within business areas to ensure the free flow of traffic.

The JMDB, accompanied by security operatives, was enforcing this order when the confrontation with the traders occurred.

The Plateau State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Alfred Alabo, confirmed the incident. He stated that the security officer responsible for the accidental shooting is currently in detention.

The tragic event has heightened tensions in Jos, with many residents and traders expressing fear and uncertainty in the aftermath of the clash.
