Organ harvesting case unfolds: teen claims N1m kidney offer

In a startling revelation at the FCT High Court in Zuba, a 16-year-old boy testified on Monday, detailing an alleged offer of N1 million made to him for his kidney by Emmanuel Olorunlaye, purportedly for removal at Alliance Hospital in Abuja.

The teenager, led in evidence by prosecuting counsel Hassan Tahir, shared his account in a case brought forth by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP).

The agency charged Olorunlaye, alongside the Medical Director of Alliance Hospital, Dr. Christopher Otabor, and others, with 11 counts related to organ harvesting.

According to the boy, he met Olorunlaye, who claimed to be the hospital’s manager, through a friend in February 2023.

He recounted being asked by Olorunlaye if he understood the purpose of their visit to the hospital, to which he replied in the negative. Later, Olorunlaye allegedly offered him N1 million to sell his kidney, a proposition he declined.

Subsequently, the boy claimed that he was taken to an FCT High Court by Chikaodili Ugochukwu, the Administrative Secretary of the hospital, where he signed a document.

He described being wheeled into an operating theatre, waking up three days later, and overhearing a conversation confirming the success of the operation. It was at this point, he alleged, that he realized his kidney had been removed.

The boy further testified about subsequent events, including receiving money from Olorunlaye for a phone, complications with the operation site, and interactions with the hospital staff and management.

During cross-examination, the defence counsel questioned the boy about his age and the circumstances surrounding the alleged kidney donation, to which he responded, indicating discrepancies in the information provided.

The judge adjourned the case until May 7 for further proceedings, as the disturbing details continue to unfold in this complex legal battle.
