Neymar faces $1 million fine for environmental charges

In a significant development, Brazilian football star Neymar is facing potential environmental penalties amounting to approximately $1 million due to “environmental infractions” related to a construction project at his luxury mansion in the state of Rio de Janeiro.

The local authorities have temporarily halted the “major construction” on the property located in Mangaratiba, situated around 130 kilometers (80 miles) from Rio de Janeiro.

According to a statement issued by the mayor’s office, the project was being carried out without the necessary environmental authorization. The construction irregularities came to light following complaints posted on social media platforms. Upon inspection, authorities discovered several violations, including the diversion of a waterway and the unauthorized extraction of water from a nearby river.

Furthermore, unauthorized excavation, movement of earth, stones, and rocks, as well as the use of beach sand without a permit, were also found during the investigation.

The mayor’s office stated, “The next step will involve assessing the extent of the violations identified and imposing a fine, which, considering the environmental damage caused, is estimated to be no less than five million reais (approximately $1 million).” Neymar’s representatives in Brazil have not yet responded to requests for comment from AFP.

During the inspection, Neymar’s father, Neymar da Silva Santos, was present at the site and engaged in a verbal altercation with officials. A video of the incident has been published by the authorities and has been circulating in the local media.

The luxurious property in question was purchased by Neymar in 2016 and reportedly spans an area of 10,000 square meters (2.5 acres). It boasts amenities such as a helipad, spa, and gym, according to local media sources.

Currently recuperating from a right ankle operation he underwent in March in Doha, Qatar, the 31-year-old Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and Brazil national team striker has been out of action since February. His extended absence from the field has led to speculation about his future at PSG.

As the investigation into the environmental infractions at Neymar‘s property unfolds, the football star may face substantial fines and potential legal consequences.

The news surrounding this incident adds another layer of complexity to Neymar’s career and personal life, generating significant interest among football enthusiasts and fans worldwide.
