Liverpool captain could be facing more troubles after Red Card

Liverpool captain, Virgil van Dijk stands a risk of being in more trouble with the premier league rules after controversial red card against Newcastle United on Sunday.

Despite the 2-1 win for the Reds, the road to the away victory was one that came far from being the fairy tale ending following their captain getting sent off in the 33rd minute for a challenge on Alexander Isak while he was through on goal against Alisson Becker.

With a goal down via Anthony Gordon’s opener, Liverpool faced a herculean task after their captain was given his marching orders by John Brooks.

The call was however not reversed by VAR, with Virgil van Dijk reportedly set to miss the game versus Aston Villa at Anfield due to the fact the challenge was not charged as a violent conduct, and by the rules the Dutchman is set to miss only one game.

Now, it is coming into notice that Virgil van Dijk despite his challenge not being charged as a voilent conduct, his reaction to getting sent off could put the Netherlands captian into more trouble.

Prior to leaving the pitch, the former Southampton man was allegedly head using profanity to describe the referee’s decision in the game and had initially refused to leave the pitch without putting up some resistance.

And according to the rules, it could be viewed as ‘improper conduct’ if the incident were to be reviewed by the Football Association.

The Liverpool captain was also seen in a fiery row with fourth official Craig Pawson while walking down the tunnel.

According to former referee, Mike Dean, he said of the situation to the Daily Mail;

“Van Dijk disagreed as he unleashed a verbal volley on fourth official Craig Pawson, which was out of line.

“Depending on what is written in the referee’s report, Van Dijk may find himself in further trouble with the football authorities.”

Opinions have so far been split on the referee’s decision to have the Liverpool captain sent off in the game, with Jamie Carragher in defense of Virgil van Dijk as he claimed there was no way in knowing if it was a “goalscoring opportunity” as claimed.

Even the Reds manager, Jurgen Klopp echoed a similar sentiment as he denied there being crucial contact to warrant a red.

“I don’t think it is a red card. It’s pretty much no contact, very little, and it’s on the way to the ball, but what can I say? The decision is like this, I cannot change it and I don’t want it.”

This has led to speculations that Liverpool may be set to appeal another red card after the successful appeal last week for Alexis Mac Allister.

If the appeal fails, and the PGMOL decide to take on Virgil van Dijk’s on pitch reaction to getting sent off, the Liverpool captain might be looking at 4 games out for the Reds.
