Jigawa conflict: Farmers vs. Herders

In a recent development, the Jigawa State Police Command disclosed an unfortunate clash between farmers and cattle herders exacerbating the ongoing Jigawa Conflict in Hayin Kogi forest, located in Birninkudu Local Government Area of the state.

According to a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the state, DSP Lawan Shiisu, the incident occurred during a confrontation as farmers were clearing bushes in preparation for wet season farming, further inflaming the Jigawa Conflict.

“At 1700HRS, farmers at the Hayin Kogi Forest were attacked by herders resident of Waza Fulani settlements of Birninkudu LGA,” stated Shiisu. “Some farmers managed to escape, leaving behind their tricycles, phones, and farm implements.”

Upon receiving the report, law enforcement swiftly mobilized to the scene, with police units from neighboring divisions surrounding the forest. As a result of the clash, a 42-year-old man and four others sustained injuries and were promptly transported to Dutse General Hospital for treatment. They have since been discharged.

Efforts are currently underway to apprehend the fleeing suspects, with the police actively investigating the case. The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ahmadu Abdullahi, has convened a stakeholders’ meeting to address the situation and ordered the arrest of the culprits.

In light of these events, the Area Commander overseeing Birninku and the Divisional Police Officers in charge of Birninkudu and Kiyawa have been directed to hold further stakeholders’ meetings to prevent any escalation of tensions and maintain peace in the area.
