"It's unfair to Hojlund" -- Martinez on Manchester United star

In Manchester United‘s victorious FA Cup match against Wigan Athletic on Monday, Portugal coach Roberto Martinez stood by Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund despite his challenging display in front of goal versus the League One side.

The Red Devils secured a win courtesy of goals from Diogo Dalot and Bruno Fernandes in the encounter.

Hojlund, returning to the starting lineup after overcoming illness, faced several opportunities to make an impact during the FA Cup third-round clash against Wigan, a League One side.

However, his performance in front of the goal fell short of expectations for Manchester United.

The Denmark international missed crucial chances in the first half, notably heading an Alejandro Garnacho cross against the crossbar from close range.

Additionally, he failed to capitalize on a saved Marcus Rashford shot, poking wide from six yards out against the hosts.

Despite the noticeable lack of confidence displayed by the 20-year-old during the match, Martinez came to his defense.

Speaking on ITV, the coach highlighted Hojlund’s commitment and contributions beyond just goal-scoring.

“He’s such a committed player, he gives you so much, it would be unfair just to judge him on goals,” Martinez expressed.

“But of course, he’s a number nine for Manchester United, there’s a big price tag, you have to score those goals, but he’s not doing anything wrong in those chances.

“Probably the header he needs to look at the ball, but the others, in a moment of confidence, the ball hits you and goes in the back of the net.”
