Hugo Broos rues South Africa defeat to Nigeria

Football can be hard — argues South Africa head coach, Hugo Broos after the defeat at the AFCON Semi-final to Nigeria on penalties.

Speaking to the press in his post-match presser, the Bafana Bafana head coach had a lot of praises for his team but a lot to rue after being defeated by the Super Eagles in what everyone presumed was South Africa’s tie to lose.

Going into the penalty shootout was what audiences presumed was the Bafana Bafana’s strength following Ronwen Williams’ heroics against Cape Verde in the quarter-final.

However, the Nigeria national team in the penalty shootouts, used the South Africa goalie’s strength in saving penalties as a weakness they exploited.

Post match, a frustrated Hugo Broos told the media;

“Football can be hard,” in honest admission of the result.

With further analysis on what he takes out from the game, the South Africa coach, stressed;

“Okay, that can happen in football. It’s a big disappointment for everyone because we feel that we played a very good game today, that we played a very good AFCON.

“I’m very, very proud of it. I’m proud of my players. The disappointment is this, but the proudness is that.”

The Nigerian Super Eagles left it late to do the damage on penalties after the Bafana Bafana levelled the tie at 1-0 to force things into 30 added minutes of play between both camps.

However, unlike in the quarter final, Stanley Nwabali came out the hero instead of Ronwen Williams.
